Case Study: Ear Infection Day Lewis Pharmacy
Fran, a Day Lewis clinician from Reigate, recently saw a patient who explained he was suffering from pain and popping sounds within the ear (a common symptom of an ear infection). Upon examination Fran observed a healthy left ear, however the right ear contained some white debris which was consistent with an ear infection surrounding the patients ear. It was also swollen and painful to the touch.
Fran captured images of both ears and sent these to the local GP practice. The GP agreed to a video consultation with the patient and within 20 minutes he had a prescription for antibiotics to treat the ear infection.
The patient was extremely happy with how quickly he was able to be seen and to receive such a fast resolution for his ear infection which had been troubling him.
This is a great example of how the Tympa system can be used as an effective diagnosis and triaging tool within the framework of existing care services. If the patient had sought help directly from the GP he may have faced a longer waiting time compared to accessing care via his local community pharmacy.
The Tympa system enables a multi-disciplinary set of clinicians to better facilitate patient access to ear and hearing health services. We want to ensure patients receive the care they need quicker and easier than ever before.
The NHS Long Term Plan aims to deliver more care in the community and is aiming to reduce face-to-face hospital appointments as much as possible. The COVID-19 pandemic has further enhanced the need for alternative and more efficient care pathways.
