We spoke to Natasha Jones from G.M. Graham Pharmacies in Essex, who has recently started delivering ear and hearing healthcare in the community with the Tympa.
What influenced your decision to offer ear and hearing healthcare at G.M. Graham Pharmacies?
We noticed an increased demand for ear care services in our community, especially ear wax removal since the service was no longer being provided by the NHS. This meant locally there has been nowhere to refer the patients to, so we knew there was a need for this service which we could provide.
By delivering care with the Tympa System at our pharmacy, it allows us to alleviate the pressure GP surgeries are facing. We’re able to treat ear conditions over the counter or prescribe antibiotics if needed by our Independent Prescriber. If a patient has a more serious issue, we can refer them on to an Audiologist or ENT specialist.
What first interested you in the Tympa?
What interested us in the Tympa was the support that was offered to us every step of the way. From the point of signing up, to providing the service to our patients, and the continued support we have received after.
Our staff have access to quick advice and guidance during consultations from ENT professionals and audiologists which provides extra reassurance to both our staff, and our patients.
What has been your favourite thing about using the Tympa?
The device is extremely convenient to use, due to it being lightweight and portable. The system is easy to navigate and provides clear images and videos which can be saved, uploaded, and forwarded to the patient if a referral is needed.
How much demand has there been for the service?
There is a high demand for the service in the community, and this will continue to grow with word of mouth and referrals from GP surgeries.
Do you have any standout patient story where you feel you really made a difference?
We had an elderly lady arrive for an appointment, who had difficulty hearing out of one ear. After looking in the ear we noticed that she had extremely compacted ear wax, which was able to be removed within one appointment. After the wax was removed the patient became very emotional and was extremely grateful for the immediate effect she experienced with her hearing, and how that would change her day-to-day living. She was given appropriate aftercare advice and advised to return in six months for a check-up to prevent further build-up of ear wax.
Have you used the Remote Review feature?
Yes, we use this quite often. We have found this to be extremely helpful. The replies are fast, detailed and offer additional advice for referrals if necessary, providing that extra level of support.
What methods have worked well when it comes to getting the word out about your new Tympa service?
We have found that when promoting the service in the community, word of mouth is very effective. We inform local GPs that we offer the service so they can refer patients to us, as well as our social media pages.
How has your journey with Tympa been so far?
All of the above. They have been extremely supportive, especially with the training. My staff found it extremely helpful with Anzil coming to the pharmacies to watch their techniques and offer additional support where needed to ensure they were confident in providing the service.
What are your plans for the future?
We plan on continuing to offer the service at across G.M Graham Pharmacies, but also any additional acquisitions we have in the future.
Any advice for other pharmacies starting out on their Tympa journey?
Use all of the support and resources which are offered from the beginning to ensure your journey is smooth.
