We spoke to Debra De Ste Croix, owner of The Holsworthy Foot Health Clinic, who recently expanded her care offering to deliver ear and hearing healthcare to her community with the Tympa Platform.

How did you start your journey using the Tympa Platform?

I run a very busy Foot Health Clinic in a small town in North Devon, after covid I was starting to get asked where people could get microsuction as the local GP practices were no longer offering the service, so I started looking online at courses for ear and hearing healthcare and found TympaHealth.

How much demand has there been for the service?

Over the last year I have seen over 250 new patients, demand is high, and my reputation is growing which is great for my business.

What type of customer uses your service?

As we live near a coastal town which has some great surfing, I see a lot of surfers, we have a large demographic of elderly and retired people in our community, but it varies from day to day.

What methods have worked well when it comes to getting the word out about your new Tympa service?

Facebook adverts initially was a great way of promoting my new extended service. Since my business has been growing in appointments, word of mouth has been a great tool for me.

What has been your favourite thing about using the Tympa device?

So many things, I really enjoy seeing the surprise on patients’ faces when I show them the video of their ears before and after an appointment. Being able to show my patients on a clear screen is extremely beneficial.

Have you used the Remote Review feature, if so, how has this been?

Yes, I have used the Remote Review feature, and it’s always been a good experience. It’s very reassuring to have the support and expertise of audiologists and ENT consultants.

Any advice for others starting out on their Tympa journey?

Patience is key, if your new to ear anatomy and microsuction then read everything you can, technique and dexterity is a fundamental part, so practice holding the Tympa Platform as much as you can, the training and support from TympaHealth is excellent and really does help you in delivering ear and hearing healthcare services to your community.

Do you have a standout patient story where you feel you really made a difference?

I had a lady come in as she suspected wax was causing dizziness and nausea. After running through the questions and consent form, I looked in her ears and found no wax, nothing stood out and her ears looked normal, she then mentioned in frustration that she was having problems with certain noises, in particular beats in music. She was frustrated because she had convinced herself the reason behind her dizziness and nausea was ear wax brought on by certain noises.

We still had 20 minutes left of the appointment, so we chatted away, and discovered it wasn’t just beats it was other noises as well, she did say she had seen a doctor a while back and he had mentioned Misophonia, she hadn’t taken it in and did not know what it was and was too embarrassed to ask.

I too suffer with this condition and my advice was to seek further help and I gave her some options, she sat and cried and said how grateful and reassuring it was that she wasn’t going mad, and she was glad she had found someone who was suffering with the same condition.
